Blood escaping from a vessel is called hemorrhage. It describes active bleeding that can be from any vessel and may be external (visible bleeding) or internal (inside the body). Hemostasis, by contrast, is the cessation of bleeding—how the body stops the bleed through vessel constriction, platelet plug formation, and coagulation. Distended refers to something stretched or enlarged, such as a vessel or organ, not the act of bleeding. Hemoptysis is specifically coughing up blood from the airways or lungs, a particular source of bleeding rather than the general escape of blood from a vessel.
